How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink – Different Methods to Apply

The kitchen sink is the most important thing in your kitchen. People try to buy the best kitchen sink to avoid further issues. But the fact is, no matter how much care do you take, your kitchen sink’s drain could be clogged.

Once this happens, it becomes difficult to pass the water from the surface. As a result, the surface of the sink becomes messy. You need to find an immediate solution to clean up this mess.

Good news is, it is not a tough job to unclog a kitchen sink. There are multiple ways to do it and here I am going to share some easy methods.

How To Unclog a Kitchen Sink

Apply Boiled Water:

This is the first step you should follow. If it fails, you can move forward to the other steps. To apply boil water, take at least 2 liters of water for boiling.

Boil the water in a pot with the optimum temperature. When it is boiling, hold the pot carefully and pour over the sink drain gradually.

Hot water removes the clogging instantly if there is less mess. For more effectiveness, you may add some salt with the boiling water which works better on clogging of the drain.

Vinegar with Baking Soda:

As we know, baking soda is a good cleaning agent for different types of messes. You can make it more effective by mixing with vinegar.

Take 2-3 cups of baking soda and take the same amount of white vinegar. Mix these two ingredients properly. There should be some bubbles after mixing them.

Now pour the mixture directly on the drain and wait for at least 15 minutes. Because this mixture takes time to start working on the clog.

After 15 to 25 minutes, run hot water on the drain and the clogging would go away.

Baking Soda and Salt:

If you find it is difficult to mix vinegar with soda, the best alternative is using salt and baking soda. The process is pretty similar to the above process.

Take 2 cups of baking soda and 1 cup of salt. Now mix them properly and apply directly on the drain clogging. The mixture will start working on the clog for making it clear.

In this process, once you have applied the mixture, wait at least half an hour before pouring water to the drain. For the best result, it is recommended to run hot water thoroughly to the drain.

Plunger:

This is the best way to unclog your kitchen sink with less hassle. So, if you don’t know what a plunger is, watch a YouTube video and you will have a clear concept.

This is a product that professional plumbers use widely. You can have one within an affordable price from online stores. So, let me assume that you already have one at home and now you want to unclog the kitchen sink.

For applying this equipment, fill the basin up to at least half of its height. If you are using a double bowl kitchen sink, seal one side of the sink with some padding and full the other bowl for unclogging.

Once the bowl is filled up to a certain level, push the plunger to the drain. It will create pressure on the water that helps to unclog the kitchen sink drain. Follow the same method for the other bowl too.

Plumber’s Snake:

This thing is also known as cable auger that is helpful to pull out the clog from the kitchen sink drain. The process is a little bit complicated. If all the above processes failed, you should use this method.

To apply the cable auger, you need to open the cabinet under your sink. Keep a bucket under the pipe so that it can hold the water.

Now detach the trap from the sink. Make empty the whole trap and collect the water on the bucket. If there is clog in the trap, reattach it after unclogging.

The next thing you are going to do is push the plumber’s snake on the drain and pull it towards you with the clogging.

Repeat this for at least three times to ensure there is no more clog on the drain. Now reattach everything in place and run some hot water in the sink.

Final Words

If you follow the above methods, it is sure that there will be no more clogging on the sink drain. However, sometimes the above processes may not work for everyone and there could be a different issue in the drain. In that case, call a professional plumber and get help.
